A template brings together the properties shoppers fill in, the rules that control them and the steps that organize the experience. You can assign the same template to several Shopify products.
The preview product is the product you design on in the template editor. Its photos and options give you a real example to work with, and JUNO automatically assigns the template to it. A preview product is a real catalog product, so keep the template in Draft while you build.
Build on a representative product
Choose a preview product with the options and photo angles your other products will share. For example, design a blanket template on a blanket with Color and Material options, a clear front photo and enough space for a name.
- Create a template and choose its preview product.
- Add Choice and Placement properties.
- Link choices such as Color or Material to the corresponding Shopify product options. Add manual choices for extras that do not come from those options.
- Position the artwork on the product photo and organize the properties into steps.
- Save, then open Preview to try the experience as a shopper.
Preview text and Preview value are design aids. They help you judge the layout in the editor; they do not prefill a shopper’s text, date, time or number. A choice’s Default value and a Design property’s Default design are separate settings that can preselect an answer for shoppers.
What carries over to another product?
| Part of the template | What happens when it is reused |
|---|---|
| Linked Choice properties | JUNO reads the matching Shopify option on the product being customized. Its available values can differ from the preview product’s. |
| Manual choices | The values you configured remain part of the shared template. |
| Placement properties | The saved position and layout carry over onto the other product’s photos. JUNO does not automatically find a new engraving or printing area. |
| Rules and steps | The shared experience carries over with the template. |
| Product views | Each product needs its own photo mapping for the views and option combinations you use. |
For example, a Color property can show Blue and Green for one blanket and Cream and Pink for another. Both blankets inherit the same position for the name placement.
If a product has no matching Shopify option, JUNO hides that linked choice. Use consistent option names across products; do not assume that Color and Fabric color are interchangeable.
Assign and check products
Open the template’s Products tab. Assign products manually, through matching conditions or across the catalog, within your plan’s limits. Keep the scope narrow until you have checked a representative selection.
For each new product, review the available choices, every photo view and the placement alignment. Consistent photo framing makes templates easier to reuse. A name positioned correctly on a centered blanket may overlap the edge of a differently cropped photo.
Where your plan supports it, Modify lets you adjust an assigned product’s placement geometry without changing the shared template. This is useful for a small position or size correction. For a different set of properties or a substantially different shopper journey, use a separate template. See plan limits.
Organize desktop and mobile steps
A step groups related properties and can show a particular product view. Use labels that describe the task, such as “Choose your blanket” or “Add a name”.
Desktop and mobile have their own step layouts. Review both: a comfortable group on a wide screen may work better as two shorter steps on a phone. Choice properties can be marked Global to appear on every step; reserve that for choices shoppers need throughout the experience.
Publish deliberately
Save your changes and test Preview before setting the template to Active. Draft templates do not appear to shoppers. An active template also needs an assigned product and the enabled app embed to show the Customize button.
Changes to a shared template affect its assigned products. Recheck a few products whenever you change properties, rules or the layout.
